Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the staunch supporter of Sunni Muslims and the dreaded al-Qaida operative was the most wanted terrorist in Iraq. He was reported to have briefly survived the air strike on his hide out located north of Baghdad. He was alive and speaking when the Iraqi police reached on the spot. Earlier, it was reported that he was killed instantly in the air strike.

Zarqawi was severely wounded and was the only one of the six people in the house to initially survive the strike. The U.S. warplanes dropped two 500lb bombs on the two-storey structure in a date grove close to the Baquba town.

The Iraqi police found him alive when they reached the scene and placed him on a stretcher from where he even made an unsuccessful bid to escape. He was again overpowered and put on the stretcher back. He died shortly thereafter due to the wounds.
