The Palestinian President and the Israeli Prime Minister have begun the talks in the West Bank, however, despite the truce negotiations between the two, Israeli aircraft unabatedly flew over the Gaza strip and killed two Palestinians and injured six terming them as the members of Islamic Jihad.
Well, how peace negotiations and air strikes can go hand in hand. Moreover, both the nations have the track record of defying the deals whenever they feel like. Therefore, I doubt both nations can stick to any peace plan whatsoever.
On the other side, the current scenario where all the Arabs and the international community are favoring Fatah in the West Bank and are alienating Hamas in Gaza, is nothing but a blunder. There are rare chances of Hamas eschewing violence and heading towards rapprochement with Abbas or Israel either and with this there are rare chances of Palestine returning to stability.
Palestine and Israel are mere puppets with strings in US’s hands. The present shift in Mideast (Hamas taking over Gaza) strengthened US’s efforts to smother Palestinian democracy, while widened the chasm by alienating Hamas and Fatah and paving the way for the success of the Israeli maneuverings, which is intended on confiscating and annexing the Palestinian land.
Since the Gaza coup, US and Israel issued frozen funds to Abbas, which is mere an eyewash and with that Abbas unknowingly started toeing the lines of both and provided US Mideast policy a firm pillar to rely upon.
So, the present move will have long lasting repercussions and invigorate ties with Iran and al-Qaeda and will give an unrelenting message to anti-US Islamists in the Mideast while making US more prone to hostile attacks.
Finally, Abbas may be enjoying the perks that he got suddenly after the Gaza takeover by Hamas - how, one hardly knows. However, does he realize that present situation has brought the two parts of Palestine viz. West Bank and Gaza at a point wherefrom reconciliations seems impossible, but its breakup permanent. And this will lead the Palestinians to accept whatever Israel or US dictates.
Therefore, for the unification of Palestine, it should realize that the need of the hour is to amalgamate the two parts, because Hamas is indispensable for the peace of the entire Mideast.
