The dark clouds of partition are not yet over from the Iraqi sky and here comes the Turkish-Iraqi deal for cracking the Kurdish rebels. Turkish army will be allowed to enter Iraqi boundary for hunting the rebels holed up in the area.
Well, for Iraq it’ll prove nothing more than a final nail in the coffin. With this the Kurdish rebels who are yearning for the independence will get new reason and impetus for fiercely demanding the same again.
The implementation of the deal will not be an easier one. This ‘hot pursuit’ will increase the violent attacks in the region and there are fears of Turkish confiscations in the resource rich area.
Turkey has done that earlier and there is no reason why it’ll not do the same again. At the same time, it can lead to a political chaos in Baghdad for Kurds can pull out of Govt. putting the political scenario in limbo.
This deal will give Turkey an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone - but how? It’ll not only help turkey to crush Kurdish rebels in Turkey but will also help in putting down Kurdish demand (living in Turkey) for the separate territory which can apart one of its oil rich area.
So, will the Govt. in Baghdad allow recurrent Turkish pursuit putting aside Kurdish objection?
Additionally, Kurds live - except Iraq and Turkey - in Iran as well. For that matter if Iran also demands the same deal then what? Will Iraq be left with any reason to say no? Of course not.
In that context, if Kurdish demand for the separate nation will be adhered then, there will be no reason for denying the same to Sunnis and Shias who are always at loggerhead with each other.
So will this remove yet another corner stone form the dilapidated Iraqi citadel? Chances are there. The deal will definitely unsettle the area while chaos most hopefully will spread over to Northern Iraq - until now Iraq’s only tranquil area.
Finally, how US (Kurds supported US Iraq invasion) will react to such a situation - remains to be seen.
