Hamas’s victory in Gaza not only alienated two parts of Palestine but also exposed the ideological chasm. Hamas’s Gaza coup overwhelmed Israel with an excellent opportunity to settle score with it. Nevertheless, the truce in Palestine is the need of the hour, but both factions are at stalemate on the issue.
Now the question remains that how the world body supports the Palestinian cause without approving Hamas with militant nationalism on its agenda.
On the other hand, Hamas’ victory in several key elections since 2005 indicates that it has deep roots in Palestine. In this condition, will Fatah’s arduous efforts to uproot Hamas influence from the society serve the Palestinian cause?
The situation is altogether different now than it was a month ago and has divided the whole world and Arabs in particular, on the Palestinian issue, which is leading the Arab world to fierce conflicts within and with the other civilizations thus intensifying the apartheid.
Therefore, Hamas is force to be reckoned with not only in Gaza but in West Bank as well, and pursuing the peace and stability in the region without its co-ordination won’t work, doesn’t matter how good the measures are for the purpose. Hani al-Masri, a Palestinian journalist aptly avers that:
You can disagree with them (Hamas), you can criticize them and say they carried out a coup in Gaza, but you can’t just make them leave.
This is the core reality, which Abbas witnessed in the past one month, and the world has to endorse. Therefore, for pace and stability it is necessary to consider Hamas than to further aggravate the situation. With this the two state solution should be considered to eschew violence while Israel and Palestine leaving with peaceful borders. With this, both should comply with all previous agreements. The key participants in this meeting will be the Israelis, the Palestinians, and their neighbors in the region rather than a third party (US) and opting for the Bush’s vision, I think, doesn’t make a sense, because the active participants and the neighbors can address the concerns well.
