Amid the surmounting violence and rising discontent among Iraqis for coalition forces, US efforts to quell violence seems to exhilarate when the Sunni residents of Amariyah, to the west of Baghdad, battled and called for US help against the Sunni insurgents who allegedly have nexus with al-Qaeda.
Lt. Col. Dale C. Kuehl, commander of 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, who is responsible for the Amariyah area of the capital, applauded citizens and deems the battle as an evidence of a deepening split between some Sunni insurgent groups and al-Qaeda in Iraq. He said:
The events of the past two days are promising developments. Sunni citizens of Amariyah that have been previously terrorized by al-Qaeda are now resisting and want them gone.
The reason for the conflict was a statement that criticized al-Qaeda for killing dozens of Sunnis in Fallujah and Baghdad. The message warned al Qaeda that any offensive in Iraq could lead to fighting among them.
Mohammed Abdul Khaliq, the mayor of the Amiriyah expressed the mixed feeling about the incident and considered US forces as the enemy of Iraqis. This what he said:
I think this is going to be the end of the al-Qaeda presence here. But if the Americans interfere, it will blow up, because they are the enemy of us both, and we will unite against them and stop fighting each other.
On the other hand, US army eyes a deal with Iraqi militants as US army believe that 80% of the combatants are reconcilable. Therefore, we can say that the oil game of US will have a new impetus in Iraq. These developments provides US ample time to configure its policies and makes Iraq more prone US divide and rule policy-possibilities can never be denied.
Finally, it is noteworthy development and Iraqis are now fed up with the violence. Moreover, US forces that are facing the troops’ casualties and Iraqi discontent can find a friend in Iraq to fight against al Qaeda. Nevertheless, any fruitful endeavorer of US to extract a deal with Sunni militants will not only help to suppress violence but will also give US a cause to stay in Iraq for a long time.
