Former President of Iraq, Saddam Hussein, may be executed this weekend only. The US administration official said that Saddam would be shifted from US to Iraqi custody in one day. The official did not confirm about the timing of the execution. According to him, this is up to the Iraqi government only to decide when to execute Saddam.
Earlier, two defense attorneys informed Saddam in his jail cell that his death sentence had been upheld.
Chief defense attorney Khalil al-Dulaimi said that
when he heard the news he did not show either any displeasure or surprise. It seems he took it as his fate. Most importantly, he is still concerned about the unity of the Iraqi people. He is a normal man.
Earlier, on November 5, Saddam was convicted for crimes against civilian in connection with the killings of 148 people in Dujail, a mostly Shiite town north of Baghdad.
Later, his death sentence was upheld by an appellate court in the country. According to the Iraqi Tribunal Court, Saddam should be hanged before January 27.
According to Iraqi law, the family members would be allowed to meet Saddam one day before the execution. They would come to know the notified date by the prison administration then. Its is just the matter of couple of days.
There is a provision to stay any execution under international law in Iraq. But Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has told that the government would not do the same in the case of Saddam.
On the other hand, the Baath party has declared that it would take revenge against the US and its interests and the Iraqi High Tribunal member, if Saddam will be executed. It said that the execution will cause grave consequences to US.
However, the Associated Press has quoted the saying of Saddam as
Dear faithful people, I say goodbye to you, but I will be with the merciful God who helps those who take refuge in him and who will never disappoint any honest believer.
