In a major political development in Palestianian politics, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) decided that it wants to be part of the opposition, preferring to influence the government from the outside. The PFLP allegedly does not agree with the agreement forged in Mecca between Fatah and Hamas, that has decided to respect previous agreements between the Palestine Liberation Organization and Israel. The PFLP activists obviously do not believe in this, and thus they have refused to support it.

Fatah and Hamas had reached an agreement in Mecca last month to form a unity government in the vision of an independent Palestinian State. The agreement was reached after months of violent clashes between the two groups. Under the agreement, Isma’il Haniyya of Hamas will retain his position as prime minister. Hamas will take nine ministerial portfolios while Fatah will take six. However, Khalida Jarrar, a PFLP member of the Palestinian Legislative Council told The Media Line that the party does not believe in the agreement reached between Fatah and Hamas. She said,

We believe these agreements will not lead to ending the occupation

She also expressed strong bereftment for the level of corruption prevalent in the political system, coupled with the lack of rule of law, and the extremely politicized nature of employment in the Palestinian government sector. All of this, according to PFLP leads to inefficiency in the political institution, and the fact that everything ends up being divided between the Hamas and Fatah is a big hurdle in the political development of the Palestinian movement.

Even other than PFLP, other problems include who gets the Interior Ministry, which controls most of the security branches. And although Officials have said they hope the government will be formed within a week, the political deadlock that seems to be arising is calling the whole political ordeal into question.
