N. Korea gave yet another jolt to the international community’s stern efforts to curb its nuclear program when it equipped its arsenal with the latest successful missile test from Iranian launch pad. It has the capacity to hit targets up to 3000 miles at middle altitude, however, there is no firm confirmation about its capability to carry nuclear warhead.
N. Korea is known for its capacity to develop the short and medium range missiles and a test of long distance missile failed last year when the missile fell well short of its target. North Korea’s prolonged efforts proved fruitful when Taepodong-2 successfully hit the coveted target.
Quid pro quo for between N. Korea, Iran and Pakistan
In the past, N. Korea and Iran were benefited with the nuclear expertise proliferation form Abdul Qadeer Khan- father of Pakistan’s nuclear bomb. N. Korea returned the favour by transferring missile technology to Pakistan that Pakistan test fired with the name Ghauri. Therefore, it would not be an exaggeration to say that it’s like quid pro quo for N. Korea and Iran. Iran has no technology to offer instead of a site and cash that Iran has in plenty because of its rich oil and natural gas reserve.
Furthermore, the missile test fired by Iran last year was based on Korean technology. For that reason, the friendship and sharing of technology between the two nations has become a grin of the EU and world community. With that US apprehensions escalate, rightly so, of Iran accessing the nuclear expertise of Korea. It will not only add another country to the school of nuclear warhead equipped nations but also will put arms race at its zenith in the Asian sub-continent. Any successful endeavor of Iran to extract the blue print of nuclear expertise will not only vigor the political crises in Asia but can woefully result in the abuse of power.
