The stakes of a nuclear arms race in the Middle East has gone up. An Arab summit ended in Saudi Arabia on Thursday with endorsement for an Arab land-for-peace proposal with Israel and a warning about a possible nuclear arms race in the region.

At the close of a two-day Arab League summit the statement released warns of a nuclear arms race in the region, in an apparent reference to Israel and Iran, which is defying U.N. demands to halt its nuclear program.

The statement after the Arab summit is the warning to the international community against the dangerous situation in the Middle East and the sliding atmosphere of war and violence that has emerged due to the failure by the West to curb Iran’s controversial nuclear program giving rise to the specter of a nuclear race in the Middle East.

The international indifference in dealing with the Israeli and Iranian aggressive policies is tearing the international framework to deal with the regional stability.

The states in the Middle East are no less than an egg box, whereby these states are the eggs and peace is maintained by the box. As the international framework starts to tear, the box is becoming fragile to prevent these eggs from hitting each other that is leading to a very messy ‘Nuclear omelet’ in the region.

But doing nothing is not an option. This tearing international framework needs a stitching with the help of the key mover Saudi Arabia that have already made a number of striking moves in an attempt to deal with the regional stability and is determined to persuade Iran to moderate its policies that jells with western interests too.

Unfortunately, the political environment is not a very secure one and amid these tensions, you don’t know exactly how the ripple effects will manifest themselves in countries wanting to have a hedge and develop capabilities that they can put to weapons use.
