iraq village massacre
The violence continues unabated in Iraq and political stability is still alluding. Another gruesome evidence of rising sectarian conflict surfaced with mass massacre of 29 members of a Shiite tribe by Sunni militants near Muqdadiyah, about 20 miles northeast of Baqouba. The incidence is an expression of religious and political antagonism between the different religious sects of Iraq.

The village carnage is seen by many as a reprisal to the massacre of the Sunnis by Shiite militias, most notably the Mahdi army, all over Iraq. The political dominance of the Shias and lack of equitable distribution of oil resources also fuel sectarian conflict in Iraq. Last months the opposing factions targeted many religious places of worship and there after reprisals are continuing.

The plan of the US strategists to win over Sunnis by financial and arm aid and pit them against the insurgents and Al Qaeda is yet to get desired result. In Ramadi and many parts of north Baghdad, the Sunnis have allied with the US forces. But in Baqouba, the capital of Diyala province the US forces and the Iraqi police has been locked in a fierce battle with the Sunni insurgents. The local clergy is also opposing collusion with the US because of its support to the Shiite factions

Political solution to Iraq problem is possible only when all sectarian leaders shading their religious and political inhibitions will come foreword for settlement. The Shias being the majority take the initiative and the minority Sunnis must refrain from violence and massacre of the Shias.
