The political chasm between Israel and Palestine doesn’t seem to bridge with the fresh developments wherein Israel decided to invigorate its offensive against Palestine with the fresh orders from Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert authorizing his army to increase ground operations in Gaza against those who are throbbing borders of Israel with rocket fire.
This is perhaps Olmert’s execution of the words that he spoke in a cabinet meeting last week when he assured that-
If the measured steps we are taking, in the political and military sphere, do not bring about the desired calm, we will be forced to intensify our response.
Furthermore, Mr. Olmert is facing tough internal situation because of inconclusive war against Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon last year and mainly because of the threats from Avigdor Lieberman, the Strategic Affairs Minister in his government, to withdraw his party support to the government if large-scale operations against Hamas will not be ordered.
Avigdor Lieberman in this regard stated:
Either Hamas is going to be dismantled, or the government is going to be dismantled. This is not an ultimatum, but these are the options.
On the other hand, Palestine is facing tough situation with the growing fears of internal peace strife growing weaker with rival Hamas and Fatah gunmen are clashing frequently to stand still the streets and forcing the people to stay inside the houses. Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit in this regard aptly avers-
Palestinian infighting only benefits the Israeli side and supports its pretext that there is no negotiation partner.
Under the fresh orders to Israel army, Gaza may witness more stiff security situation because the orders will empower the army to crusade in the territory for dismantling the Hamas outfits.
However, Mahmoud Abbas appealed to militants for a fresh truce with Israel, which Hamas vehemently denied to comply with and pledged to continue its fight against Israel. The prolonged violence and bloodshed has weakened the hopes for the resumption of peace and stability in the region. In addition, hopes to quell violence improve security and to maintain law and order to eschew kidnappings, clan clashes and factional feuding, dashed to the ground more often than not.
