Fire and disaster management drills have already had their share of attention for being really helpful during times of actual disasters. These drills are actually enactments wherein a disaster-like situation is taught to be dealt with. The participants act as the disaster is actually taking place and act accordingly. However, when the country in question is Israel the drills they undergo are of a little different nature. The country after been attacked by the Hezbollah in 2006 has now started conducting drills as a part of an exercise to deal with terror attacks.
It is always said that ‘it is better to be safe than be sorry later’. This is the saying that the Israel government seemed to be following as it rang a rising and falling siren at 10 a.m. signaling the most public aspect of the week long drills. The drill was successful in many schools across the country where students hid and the injured students were treated by paramedics in what was a mock terror attack. This drill taught the students as well as the teachers along with many other civilians to deal with panic during such attacks and save themselves in these conditions. The security cabinet members along with the Prime Minister Ehud Olmert underwent a much stricter kind of drill to deal with a situation if the country had multiple missile attacks. The security crew was also taught to deal with a situation if the chemical plant was attacked by missiles. This, as the prime minister said was a part of getting ready to face terror attacks and nothing aggressive. Denying any ulterior motives Mr. Olmert said
I want to emphasize that this is only a drill, with nothing hiding behind it, we have no secret plans. This drill is not part of anything else.
