is iran contributing to iraq violence

It has long been suggested that Iran is at the centre of the sectarian violence that is currently rippling Iraq apart. Suspicions have always been riffed that Iran has been smuggling arms and ammunitions to Iraq and has been supplying them to the insurgents. No concrete proofs have been deciphered so far but the fact that Iran is getting more and more adversely embroiled into the volatile situation in Iraq cannot be denied.

The US has been at the forefront to declare Iran as a harmful neighboring Sate to Iraq. President George W Bush has always maintained President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is the one responsibly for worsening the situation in Iraq and that the Iranian leader does possess the power to mend the critical circumstances in Iraq. Several Iraqi security officials have come out of their shells and expressed their opinions on the matter and now Iraqi National Security Adviser, Mr. Mowaffak al-Rubaie, has blamed Iran for actively supporting the insurgents in Iraq.

Mr. Rubaie quoted this year’s detainment of Iranian agents and interception of Iranian arms shipments as key indicated to the help that the Iraqi insurgents are acquiring from Iran. He also remarked that these arrest are just the tip of the iceberg and more discovery is yet to be accomplished. To support his words, there was the report of the killing of at least 25 Shiite militants by the US military in an attempt to overhaul a cell suspected of smuggling arms fro Iran.

Whether Iran knowingly contributes to the violence in Iraq or now is a matter of intense debate of course but there’s little doubt that insurgents are getting help from sources inside Iran. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has somewhat softened his tone against the US in recent weeks and has also been discerned to be more approachable to world issues. Maybe this is a sign that Iran is eager to help its neighbor Iraq in crawling out the mire that seems to have enveloped the entire country.
