Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is not the most popular man in US President George W Bush’s list; on the contrary, the Iranian leader is one whom the Bush administration wants to bring under its wings. But the continual resistance by Ahmadinejad to succumb to Bush’s power and control has made the Iranian President a figure of hatred and apprehension for the Americans. And anxiety would be one of the key words when the Iranian leader addresses the United Nations General Assembly and discusses several matters with students and teachers at Columbia University in the coming days.
The signs have already been planted. President Ahmadinejad arrived in New York on Sunday and presented the Americans an idea of what his opinion on the world is. He was quite ominous in declaring that he is ready to spearhead the indoctrination of America into actual truth and would gladly take upon himself to make sure America listens to a different voice advocating different ideas.
President Ahmadinejad and Mr. Bush have been at loggerheads since the war on terror began in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. Bush accuses Iran of harboring weapons of mass destruction and asserts that Iran’s persistence to go nuclear is actually a sign that it wants nuclear weapons for destructive purposes. Iran has continuously denied that it wants to cause any harm to the world and insists that it wants nuclear enrichment only for peaceful purposes.
It’s still not clear who’s right and who’s not in this blame game between Mr. Bush and the Iranian President but one thing’s sure: the General Assembly meeting in New York this week is certain to invite a feisty debate between the two leaders. Ahmadinejad is one controversial character who has already earned biting criticisms from the international community for his call to wipe out Israel, denial of the holocaust and allegations of his support for terrorism in the neighboring States of Iran.
President Ahmadinejad has also been invited by the Columbia University to speak to the students and teachers there. There too the out-spoken Iranian leader is anticipated to raise some smoke. US President Bush has somehow convinced the world that Iran is a threat to world peace and security and now it is Iranian President Ahmadinejad’s turn to reply.
