Iranian President recently demanded that he should be allowed to attend a meeting of the United Nations Security Council, and be given a chance to defend his country. The leader is obviously seeking an appropriate public outlet to clear out the tension over Iran’s disputed nuclear program. Iran is also upset regarding the suspension of two dozen nuclear aid programmes by the IAEA.
Iranian government spokesman Gholam Hossein Elham was quoted as below
The president of Islamic Republic of Iran intends to attend a U.N Security Council meeting to be held on Iran’s nuclear case in order to defend the rights of the Iranian nation in exploiting peaceful nuclear energy
The tension has been ongoing since long, atleast since December 2006 when the U.N. Security Council in December imposed limited sanctions against Iran over its refusal to freeze uranium enrichment. The five permanent Security Council members plus Germany are now consulting on imposing additional sanctions because Tehran has continued to defy demands that it stop enrichment. The proposals include a travel ban, an expanded list of people and companies subject to an asset freeze, an arms embargo and trade restrictions.
Iran has consistently defended its nuclear ambitions saying that it will not cave under the western pressure. It asserts its sovereignty, saying that its nuclear program is completely peaceful. Iran has also bee alleging that the real motive behind these sanctions and the anti-nuclear drive initiated by the western countries is to hold back the Middle East region and maintain the western hegemony over it. The western countries, on their part, maintain that Iran is using the peaceful garb as a way to cover up its production of nuclear weapons, which if true, could jeapordize global security.
