Iran is a threat- a threat to achieve peace in Iraq, so attacking Iran is part of the solution. The Iran attack story is ready. A report filed yesterday by the Russian News agency RIA Novosti indicates that Russian intelligence has information that the U.S. Armed Forces have nearly completed preparations for a possible military operation against Iran and will be ready to strike in early April.
But it seems a far cry from the diplomatic proposals. Is President Bush really saying that we are willing to risk war with another country- a country three times as big as Iraq and a country that is nuclear capable to achieve peace in Iraq? Well good luck with that!!
However, everyone has been warning about the possibility of War with Iran for years now but this seems to me a secluded report and there’s no way I am going to take this one.
In any case, before the first bomb is dropped somewhere in Iran, someone should ask American strategists what would happen in the Middle East after such a strike. Isn’t it likely that we would see an unprecedented popular wave of anti-Americanism? Would the regimes in the region allied to the United States (Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf petro-monarchies, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon or Iraq) find themselves strengthened or weakened as a result? Isn’t it likely that insurrections or even revolutions will break out? Would America be able to contain them as they are already paying the price for invading Iraq?
As long as American strategists have no answers to these questions, I think it will be better for them to remain inclined to caution. And in any case they still bomb Iran it will surely be the death of America.
