The future of the Gaza strip and the West Bank remains again in a loop even as Hamas and Fatah have signed a reconciliation deal sponsored by Yemen at Sanaa. The deal, which is being referred to as the Sanaa Declaration was signed between the Hamas negotiator Moussa Abu Marzouk and Fatah official Azzam Al-Ahmad, who have jointly admitted and asserted the ‘unity of Palestinian people, territory and authority’.
Although the two antithetical political segments have decided to revive talks among themselves after a considerable period of time, the two do not seem to be agreed on the question of who will end their dominance over the disputed Gaza strip and related areas. The Palestinian President,Mahmoud Abbas, has reiterated the fact that the Hamas, which has presently occupied the Gaza Strip, should and must end its dominance over the region so that the two partied can mutually start a dialogue.
With the Hamas beholding the title of an extremist Palestinian Islamic militant group, it seems very likely that the situation can take a hostile course even as the two groups have asserted their wish to work together in settling of disputes in a mutually peaceful manner.
Disputes and disagreements were very ambiguous moments after the signing of the agreement which took place. Although these were denounced by the Abbas’s office, the reinforcement of the dialogue and the Yemini initiative seems to be the ground on which the Fatah party wants to act. As Ahmad iterated,
We look towards implementing the Yemeni initiative and fostering Palestinian national unity.
Yemen seems to be particularly interested in this as a joint dialogue and had been pressurizing the Palestinians to enter into a framework which will foster negotiations and peace in the region. But with an age old dispute and many interventions, it is still unclear as to when the Palestinian conflict will cease to exist. Although it seems to be a very concerted effort from Yemen, the future of the disputed Palestine areas still lies bleak.
