Condoleezza Rice is a happy woman. She has brokered peace in the warring Gaza strip. And now all parties involved there are going to sit down soon in Annapolis and have all their problems sorted out. There will be created a definite Palestinian State. Terrorism will cease; Hamas will give up arms and its members will live to be retired grand-fathers savoring ripe olives many years from now.
In the future, right wing orthodox rabbis will often come to Palestine and chit-chat the so many names of Yahweh and Allah with their Muslim brethren. The Washington Post has reported the Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas expecting the creation of a Palestinian State within 2009. This is only a dream apt to become nightmarish fast. One feels bad for the hasty Abbas.
There are just too many odds stacked against Palestine:
Israel does not believe Palestine can deliver on its own words. The public perception is that it is a rogue state. Abbas’ talks are just that. They will never amount to anything more tangible than talks. Even if everybody sits down to talk, Hamas and also Arab mercenary terrorists will not so fast to give up arms. Unless, Hamas incursions into Palestinian territory ceases, there is no real chance for peace.
Current Israeli government is made up of a dangerous coalition. There are right wing conservatives Jews in the team. They will not allow any concessions to be given to the Palestinians whatsoever. The Israelis have already asked for a future, time-bound, goal driven peace plan. The Palestinians not having any may not be taken seriously.
Most importantly, US may not want peace in the region. Once there is lasting peace there, it is the US who stands to lose. It will not be listened to either in Palestine or Israel. The oil stakes will pass off US’s hands. The whole point of US interference in the region is to keep all possible problems simmering between nations in Mideast. All these seven trips of US Secretary of State including her flurried movements in the region about three weeks ago is merely eyewash.
May be, the regional leaders are learning from the US. They are now given to making impromptu and impossible speeches. Abbas is not a foolish man. He knows the ground reality. So, we must take his publicly announced hopes with a pinch of salt.
