Now that President Bush is on his way out and the US has been left red-faced by the Iraqi invasion; scapegoats have to be found. And whom better than an erstwhile Iraqi named Rafid Ahmed Alwan aka Curveball. TimesOnline goes all out to prove the point that it was essentially Colin Powell’s naiveté in early 2003 which began the Iraqi invasion by the US. Curveball is an Iraqi defector who spilled the beans to the international community about Iraq’s biological weapon and huge nuclear arsenal. Only thing, whatever Curveball said then is now know to be false. The report points out how he lied for pecuniary needs. He hoodwinked every person in the First World. But this cannot be the whole truth. It is impossible that whole Intelligence Agencies will bow to the unverified claims of an alcoholic lusting after the good life. It is impossible that this double-agent’s deposition will be taken with total belief. And definitely Colin Powell is too astute a politicians and policy maker to be influenced by the ravings of one man. Then what is the truth?
To understand the reality we have to examine the nature of both the relationship of media conglomerates with their governments and also the white psyche in general. In the first case, the media is a tool in the hands of the government. It dare not convey anything which might be construed as provoking anarchy. The latter is anathema to all First World Governments. The second issue refers to the historical eagerness of the US to pass on any blame for going into war into any other nation. During the Vietnam War, the Vietnamese were condemned by the US for dragging her peace-loving children to war. It serves the Bush administration now very well to have an Iraqi blamed for the start of a devastating war. That is all that there is to the report in Times Online. Like the man it blames for starting the war, this report is also just a propagandist polemic. There is nothing serious to it, neither is it probable. If a mere journalist can dig up all the truth about Curveball, then we can be assured that the CIA had long ago, even as early as 1999, figured out the truth about the double-agent. There remains one shameful drift which is evident in such yellow-journalism. By portraying an Iraqi as a traitor to his own nation, the White world wants to declare to the international community that Iraqis and other oppressed people are not only materially poor but essentially lack character. May be, the undertone is: that is why the US is needed in such nations; to help uplift their despicable moral and material lives.
