balkanisation of iraq
Criticisms are being lavished on the US Senate for its balkanization of Iraq plan and the top critics include the members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), who call it as ‘unprecedented flagrant interference’ on the part of the US that ‘would add new complications to the already difficult Iraqi situation.’

The embroiling situation in Iraq seems to have forced the US into formulating a proposal of fragmentation of the country into three parts. The US Senate views it as a perfect solution for the imperfect situation in Iraq that has been in the grip of violence, bloodshed and hooliganism ever since the US-led NATO forces invaded the country for restoring peace and disbanding the weapons of mass destruction. Now, several years into the war, Iraq continues to reel and soak in the horrendous bloodbath unleashed by the sectarian conflict that is passively aired and aided by the al-Qaeda.

When the US senate came up with the plan of fragmentation of Iraq between the Shia, Sunni and the Kurds, the world stood surprised and the most astonished were the members of the GCC that includes, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. In its proposal, the US Senate saw light at the end of a very dark tunnel (Iraq), yet the light can be only viewed by the US. There are different factions who depart from the US in such an astounding proposal. If division of the country was the only solution that the US could find, then why it took America so late to decide the same? Doesn’t it show that the US has totally failed in fulfilling its mission of restoring peace in the country with a stable government?

partitioned iraqq

The situation is awful in Iraq, with everyday bombings and mass massacres. With a huge pressure at home of withdrawing its troops from the trouble-torn Iraq, the proposal seems to be a face saving effort on the part of the most powerful nation in the world. It wants to show that it is committed to restoring peace in Iraq, therefore not giving more airs to the sectarian conflict in the country, it has decided to fulfill the wishes of the three factions of a separate autonomous homeland for themselves.

Is the balkanization of Iraq the only solution remaining? If it is so then the writing is on the wall and, though we cannot see light at the end of this very dark tunnel, yet the darkness to follow is aptly clear to us, if the country is partitioned. Partition can never be a solution - the perfect example is India and Pakistan. Once the country is divided, the violence wouldn’t stop- the fight for control of oil, water and other riches will sprout and the result will be no less-violent than it is today. Does the US have anything to say?
