The US and other Western governments are portraying Iran, as a real threat to international peace and security. The western countries are somewhat prepared to fight Iran. The interesting comment from Robert Gates, U.S. defense secretary, said military action against Iran would be ‘an absolute last resort’ and diplomacy should be used first. This kind of makes it clear that the objective is to secure public consent for another war of conquest on an economically nationalist, oil-rich country.

However, what war with Iran would look like?

Accused of developing nuclear weapons under the veil of a civilian nuclear energy program, Iran has been threatened with sanctions through the United Nations, and given several direct ultimatums by the United States to stop its uranium enrichment and nuclear development program.

While negotiations goes on in the west, Arab leaders, meeting in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, on Sunday, said they intended to start a joint nuclear energy development program, a move certain to heighten concerns over a possible race for nuclear power in the oil-rich Persian Gulf. Leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council concluded a two-day summit meeting in Riyadh on Sunday, agreeing to study how to proceed with development of such capacity.

However, what is interesting to note is that at the same time, they called for a peaceful settlement of the crisis over Iran’s nuclear program. Prince Saud al-Faisal, Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister, speaking to reporters said,

‘It is not a threat,’... ‘It is an announcement so that there will be no misinterpretation for what we are doing.’

The announcement clearly warns the United States not to acquiesce to Iran’s nuclear ambitions as pressure grows on the Bush administration to reach out to Iran for help in stabilizing Iraq.

This is hard to figure out right now that the United States will not carry through with their plans to attack or change the regime in Iran. However, one thing’s for sure that US will have to juggle around with the Iran plans. These delays, however, already reflect real difficulties for the U.S. in carrying out such a campaign, as well as the divisions among the American rulers about the feasibility and success of launching such an attack will make it further more worse.
