According to a pentagon assessment report of security conditions in Iraq, ‘Measuring Stability and Security in Iraq,’ violence against Americans troops had rushed high this summer and gone to the highest level.
The report says that violence by Shi’ite militants is the most significant threat in Iraq.
The report has covered the period from early August to early November. During this period, almost 960 attacks on average against Americans and Iraqis have occurred every week.
This is the highest level recorded since when the Pentagon has started making quarterly reports in 2005.
The biggest target of these attacks is the more than 17,000 American combat troops and American-led forces. Pentagon report says that earlier, the weekly average was 175 in the previous three months and showed an increase of 22 per cent from the level for early May to early August. The quantum jump has caused 93 civilian deaths and injuries per day.
However, the report says that most attacks were directed to American forces but it caused most deaths and injuries to the Iraqi military and civilians.
The report says further that Shi’ite militias have its links in the Iraqi police. This is the major cause behind the increased levels of murders and executions.
