Five US soldiers have been charged in a rape and multiple murder case committed in March in Iraq for which they could face the death penalty. The rape victim, Abeer Qasim Hamza al- Janabi, was just 14 years old and not 20 as US officials maintained. Among the dead were her sister, Hadeel and parents. Abeer’s brothers aged 13 and 10 escaped because they were not in the house at the time of the incident.

Former private Steven Green was charged as a civilian with rape and four murders along with four serving soldiers. The US military has not disclosed the name of the troops. Another soldier faces dereliction of duty charges for not reporting the crime in March. He was probably a sixth member of Green’s former unit in 502nd Infantry Regiment.

The perpetrators of the crime tried to burn the bodies and the house to cover their tracks but did not succeed. Since it came to light that the US was investigating whether Marines had killed 24 people at Haditha on November 19, this is the fifth case of serious crime being probed by the US army. In the past month or so 16 soldiers have been charged with murder- as many as in the previous three years of fighting.

The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mr Nuri al- Maliki, wants a review US troops’ immunity from Iraqi law. But as he is just a lackey of the US it is very doubtful whether he will press for it. He is compromising on Iraqi pride just to be called the Prime Minister of a US-backed puppet government. Mr Nuri reminds one of the Indian traitors who sided with the Britishers just for the sake of power, wealth and title.

The US army’s behaviour in Iraq just lays bare the blood-thirsty Americans mindset which is oriented towards murder, rape, pillage and burning in conquered countries on concocted charges of possessing weapons of mass destruction and harbouring terrorists. Even in the case of India it is backing Pakistan-sponsored terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir indirectly by pumping arms and money into the latter. Those Indians who are great admirers of the US and say it is restoring sanity to the world would, one is sure, think otherwise if they had lost their near and dear ones in Jammu and Kashmir. The US is in a way fanning terrorism across the world either by proxy or directly.
